Compensation at SIL

Working at SIL provides many opportunities for unique work experiences. SIL is a leader in flexible and remote work assignments. We've been working from home before the pandemic, and many of our full-time jobs offer opportunities for caring for families. Caring for people is one of our top values.

Supported Staff

The majority of SIL staff are hired through partner organizations who come alongside applicants and train them to raise financial support. Most of our staff raise their own salary as members of a partner organization that matches their passport country:

Can I serve without raising my own salary?

SIL needs both members and volunteers to help make Bible translation possible. If being a supported staff is not for you, you can use your skills and abilities as a volunteer — both domestically and globally. The application process is shorter than that of membership, and includes flexibility in where, how long and what time of year you want to serve.

Volunteers need to have a heart for Bible translation. Remote volunteers have the most flexibility; on-site volunteers must:

  • be in good health and have adequate health insurance,
  • cover living expenses, and
  • comply with the country and organization’s rules and requirements.
