Orthography consultant

This position would be a combination of helping individual projects with advice and consulting on specific orthography issues. These could be linguistic, sociolinguistic, literacy-related, culturally-related, or technically-related. The consultant would also assist the Orthography Services Coordinator with occasional research or organizational issues.

Job Description


  1. Consult with individual or group orthography projects
  2. Assist Orthography Services Coordinator in planning and coordination
  3. Research as needed, either original or scouring and summarizing literature

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Linguistics: phonology and morphology especially, to determine contrasts, phonological processes. Acquainted with syntax.
  2. Literacy: basic learning strategies and teaching methods
  3. Sociolinguistic factors influencing dialect and acceptability issues
  4. Know and balance usability and acceptability issues for orthographies
  5. Ability to understand local, governmental, technical perspectives and negotiate solutions with all

Education and Experience: M.A. or PhD required. Experience in a local orthography project.

Training and Orientation: Orientation with Orthography Services Coordinator
